Park Information:
The highest mountain in Africa, located in Northeast Tanzania, near the Kenya border. Born of the catastrophic movements in the Earth's crust that created the Great Rift Valley that runs from the Red Sea through Tanzania to Southern Africa, Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano, and is one of the most massive in the world. This great mountain creates a micro-climate around itself and the rain-shadow created to the South and East supplies the beautiful and superbly fertile lands. For the adventurous, a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro is a must taking you through the mists of equatorial jungle to reach the snows and breath-taking views from the summit.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park comprises all of the mountain above the tree line and six forest corridors that stretch through the montane forest belt.

The climb up Mount Kilimanjaro is a very rewarding experience, and is a must for fit adventure-seekers. Experienced guides, accompanied by porters, lead visitors to the top of the mountain via various routes, passing through a variety of vegetation - forests, alpine vegetation, semi-desert, moorland - before reaching the icy top. Visitors can arrange such tours from Moshi or Arusha. The climbs can take anywhere from 5-8 days. While the mountain can be climbed all the year round, the most popular time is around December-January. April, May and November should be avoided, because rainfall is heavy at that time.
Mt Kilimanjaro Tanzania has its summit close to the altitude of Mt. Everest's base camp but it does not stand out as the highest peak in a snow-capped mountain range. It rises in complete isolation in a land of flat plains grazed by elephants, zebras and other African animals. Few large animals are found in this zone though colobus and blue monkeys can often be seen but other inhabitants such as smaller antelopes an leopards are very shy. Many colourful birds are found here, the most noticeable being the Hornbill and the Turaco with its dark red wing markings. Eagles and buzzards soar high above and smaller birds such as the alpine chat and streaky seed eater can also be seen.

Tanzania is a vast region which is more than the size of Kenya and Uganda combined. It has the largest area under conservation with enormous spaces of virtually virgin land. This country is the land of the famous Serengeti National Park, the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater with its stunning views and the mythical island of Zanzibar with its richness in history and friendly people. Tanzania has almost 1,000 kilometers of coastline and is therefore an excellent destination for beach holidays.

DAR ES SALAAM
Dar es Salaam, once called "Mzizima" (which means the healthy town), is an old city dating as early as 1857. Though the history of Mzizima went beyond 1,000 years when the Barawa people (who then mingled with Zaramo to become among them) started to settle and cultivate the area around Mbwa Maji, Magogoni (now Kivukoni) Mjimwema, Gezaulole
The city has seen major changes dating from the influences of the Sultanates to the Germans and then British. The name Dar es Salaam means heaven of peace, a name chosen by Sultan Seyyid Majid of Zanzibar. SERENGETI IN TANZANIA
The park covers 14,763 sq km of endless rolling plains, which reach up to the Kenyan border and extends almost to Lake Victoria. The park is flourishing with magnificent wildlife. An estimated 3 million large animals roam the plains. People of the Maasai Tribe called it Siringitu - 'the place where the land moves on forever.' The Serengeti is known as one of the best wildlife sanctuary in the world.
Serengeti is renown for the migration of animals. Every October and November, more than a million wildebeest and about 220,000 zebras travel south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short tropical rains, and then journey west and north after the long rains in April to June. The animals' ancient instinct to move is so strong that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. The Wildebeest migrate through a number of parks, reserves and protected areas and through a variety of habitat.

NGORONGORO CRATER IN TANZANIA.
Ngorongoro Crater is a part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which was created in 1959.
In the 1920's it was treated as part of the Serengeti. It is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera ( collapsed volcano) in the world, with the crater itself covering an area of 259 square kilometres and having walls over 600 meters high. It was formed by geological faulting in the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley two to three million years ago. The volcano created was probably larger than Mount Kilimanjaro. the quick withdrawal of molten lava beneath it made the centre collapse, creating the crater we see today. the name Ngorongoro comes from a Masai word, llkorongoro which was the name given to the age group of Masai warriors who wrested the highlands from the datong, their previous occupants.

ZANZIBAR IN TANZANIA.
The Slave Trade
In 1822, the Omani Arabs signed the Moresby treaty which amongst other things, made it illegal for them to sell slaves to Christian powers. So that this agreement could be monitored, the United States and Great Britain established diplomatic relations with Zanzibar, and sent Consuls to the islands. However, the slaving restrictions were largely ignored, and the trade continued to kill and imprison countless Africans.
Caravans started out from Bagamoyo on the mainland coast, travelling as much as 1,000 miles on foot as far as Lake Tanganyika, buying slaves from local rulers on the way, or, more cheaply, simply capturing them. The slaves were chained together and used to carried ivory back to Bagamoyo. The name Bagamoyo means 'lay down your heart;' because it was here that slaves would abandon hope of freedom. Slaves who survived the long trek from the interior were crammed into dhows bound for Zanzibar, and paraded for sale like cattle in the Slave Market.
